Staying Fit

How to get fit by playing tennis

  • realbuzz - challenge yourself

More and more people are picking up a racquet to enjoy tennis. It’s a more accessible sport than you might think; tennis is sociable, exciting and, of course, great for your fitness levels. Here's the realbuzz.com introduction to starting out in the intensive, enjoyable and active world of tennis.

An introduction to tennis

It may seem to many of us that tennis is just an elite sport which is played for a few weeks during a Grand Slam. When many of us are itching to go out and play after watching another success by Roger Federer, we usually find that the parks are full, and then perhaps don’t make another effort until the same time the following year.
But you don’t have to wait for the summer to enjoy the delights of tennis. Tennis nowadays is a more accessible and year-round sport than you might think; it’s sociable, exciting and, of course, great for your fitness. More than 75,000,000 people are believed to play the sport worldwide.

Tennis can be played indoors or outdoors, on a range of surfaces such as grass, concrete, clay and artificial turf. The game can be played as singles (one player versus one player) or doubles (two players versus two players).

These days you don’t need to be overly concerned about the weather. If it is fine, then a good match outdoors can be just what you need, but sports clubs make it easy to play throughout the winter, whatever conditions are blown our way.

The real barrier, perhaps, to starting tennis, is if you have no-one to play with, but there are plenty of clubs who open their doors to players of all standards. You could knock around with other club members, or many of them offer a ‘ladder’ in which players play against others of similar ability and then move up or down the ladder according to their success or failure.

Tennis clubs are generally laid-back and sociable, with a mix of friendly competitiveness for those that choose to play club matches.

How playing tennis gets your body fit

Playing tennis can have a number of positive health and fitness benefits on your body.

Here are some of its key exercise advantages:

  • Tennis improves aerobic fitness, with more oxygen circulated around the body to better muscular endurance.
  • Tennis burns off calories with energy being supplied to the muscles and not forming fat.
  • Tennis boosts flexibility and sprint speed, due to the fast-paced nature of the game.
  • Tennis improves hand-eye co-ordination with concentration required for serving.
  • Tennis develops the strength and power of muscles, notably leg and arm muscles.
  • Tennis furthers concentration and mental strength, with matches often lasting for many hours.
  • Tennis boosts a player's cardiovascular fitness (the heart and lungs organs), allowing more oxygen to be pumped around the body and help energize muscles.

The J Tennis Center will be open through April 30, 2018

The incredible support we’ve received from our community over the past several months has reinvigorated every facet of our Tennis Center. Because of this, we are thrilled to announce that the Center will remain open through April 30, 2018! We greatly look forward to building on the energy, enthusiasm, and excitement of our members during the 2017-2018 season.

Summer registration opens on March 13. All existing members must execute a new contract before May 1, 2017 for the summer season. Memberships not renewed will be considered new and will be subject to applicable initiation fees. Our updated summer/winter season pricing, rules, and regulations are listed below.

To our current members–your commitment to this sport and to our community is inspirational. Thank you for your love of the game, your connection to the J and to one another, and for your support of Stacy and me during our first season here.

See you on the court,

TGA introduces the life-long sport of tennis at a young age through programs that provide a fun and enriching experience for children while being a convenient and affordable option for parents. Their dedicated coaching staff help students develop their skills and a passion for tennis while using the sport as a vehicle for delivering curriculums that are loaded with educational concepts including STEM and life skills such as respect, honesty, perseverance and sportsmanship. TGA stands for: Teach, Grow, Achieve – the foundation of every program. Partnered with the USTA, they invite you to give your child the advantage of learning and playing tennis in an environment that will be beneficial for a lifetime. Classes are held at schools right after school and during camps at facility partner locations in the summer. Find out more at playtga.com/douglas.

Douglas County Tennis is growing in participation due to the efforts and passions of Ben Wolfe. He became the head pro in 2014 and continues developing youth programming, adult leagues and instruction throughout Castle Rock. With 13 years of coaching and teaching experience, he’s interacted with a spectrum of abilities, skills and personalities. In addition to Douglas County Tennis, Ben also teaches Chemistry at Castle View High School and is the Head Coach for Girls Tennis. He’s a self-taught player who understands the relationship between mind and body and incorporates nutrition, fitness and mobility into his instruction and training whenever possible. While Bison Park is certainly home to a variety of tennis activities, he has also extended his reach to South Ridge and Sedalia Elementary Schools and continues to successfully integrate tennis with community.
